The legal filing dates at this point for trustee petitions remains December 17-24. Because libraries (and other governmental agencies) are closed on December 24, there was much discussion on this topic on library listservs and at the recent McHenry County Library Directors meeting. Since Katherine Schultz, McHenry County Clerk, told one director that all the law says is that you need to accept election petitions until 5 pm on Dec. 24, some libraries have decided to have minimal late afternoon hours on that day, and only for accepting petitions. In order to meet this legal obligation, I will be here from 3-5 pm on Dec. 24 only for the purpose of accepting any possible petitions. These special hours for Dec. 24 will be stated on all our holiday hour postings.
We started the school year with one female student from the Transitions program getting trained to do cleaning here twice a week (in addition to Coverall’s twice a week cleanings). The trainer could tell that she was not going to be fast enough, so we got a different female student. While she seemed to be working out OK, there were issues with JHS regarding being able to provide adult supervision during holidays and the summer, in addition to transportation issues. One of the adults working in the JHS Transitions program and responsible for placement, also does a similar job for McHenry High School. They have no problem providing transportation and supervision at all times, so our next student trainee will be a male from McHenry HS. As has been the case, once they have been here for a couple of weeks and appear to be working out OK, they will be added to our payroll.
I’ve been asked to be Bush School’s first Mystery Reader of the year. I’ll be reading a library/book related picture book(s) to five different 3rd grade classes on Oct. 5.
Melanie recently received a very nice thank you card from patron Jill Bales in appreciation for the help Melanie provided. The handwritten portion of the card says “People like you are far and few between. Your kindness does not go unnoticed”. Congratulations to Melanie for the great customer service! And what a wonderful treat to have a patron take the time to compliment staff. A big huge thank you goes out to the entire staff, who all go out of their way to provide such fabulous service to our patrons.
